General Questions

Question: How can Brava help my organization?

Brava provides significant cost-savings by enabling visual access to files in different formats without requiring the native, authoring application on every desktop and by reducing the risk of compromising the original files. This collaboration software improves communication and process efficiency by enabling your organization and your suppliers/customers (if desired) to review and annotate (markup) office documents, images and CAD drawings in a browser-based, unified interface. Brava also allows redaction of office documents, images and CAD drawings.

Question: What's unique about Brava?

Brava is clean and simple. Very efficient for both documents and drawings, it offers a single, unified user interface that requires no training to use. It boasts excellent fidelity and supports rich content concepts like text search, layers, and block attributes. Brava views most any native format so no conversion is needed, though all popular neutral formats—like PDF, XPS, DWF and our secure CSF—are also supported. Brava also handles more concurrent users with fewer servers than competitive offerings. Finally, Brava helps maintain security over your content through features like exporting to CSF with Visual Rights, view only access options (no annotation), standard HTTP/HTTPS communication between client and server (no security configuration changes required), and in-memory client-side processing (nothing is left on the client machine). The client is web-served, so admin doesn't have to spend time installing software on every machine.

Question: Why does Brava handle more concurrent users than other systems?

The more the server does in a client/server solution, the fewer users it can handle. Competitive solutions process (stream) every client zoom, pan, layer change and print request on the server, requiring more resources per document and per user. The server must keep a session for each client, consuming significant memory to hold rendered bitmap tiles for each client view state. Brava Enterprise minimizes the processing load and memory consumption required by the server by letting the client handle most view changes. Brava is deployed on some of the world's largest construction project collaboration sites and financial institutions because it handles large concurrent loads very well.

Question: How much training is required to use Brava?

None. Brava intuitive and simple interface makes it possible to use immediately with no special training.

Question: What navigation and display tools does Brava offer?

Brava offers dynamic zoom, pan and magnifier view controls; visual compare of two files showing differences; rotate and mirror; layer control; scale to gray (for black and white raster), page thumbnails, geometry snap measurement tools; and text search and term hit highlighting.

Question: What types of annotation/markup functions does Brava have?

Brava's markup tools include lines, polygon and cloud shapes, highlights, text annotations, and sticky notes. Markups maintain author and date information and are saved as XML overlays to the original document. They can also be saved as DXF files, and optionally annotations and the document can be combined into a single rendition and saved as PDF, JPG, TIFF or secure CSF.

Question: How is Brava's redaction better than other alternatives?

Brava performs true redaction, with the redacted (blocked out) content being removed as it is saved to a PDF, TIFF or secure CSF rendition. Brava removes redacted text strings in a way that is impossible to de-engineer (which is technically possible in other solutions since the font and character sizing of each letter removed remains).  Search for and redact words/phrases at one time, or redact from a list of phrases. Redaction scripts can be utilized as well in Brava 6.2.

Question: Why is Brava easier to use than competitive offerings?

Brava's familiar Windows interface is uncluttered, with an emphasis on navigation so you can quickly find what you need whether you are viewing a document, image or CAD drawing. Documents load zoomed to width for easy reading. Drawings load in Fit All view, ready for you to select the initial zoom area. The combination Zoom/Pan tool lets the user get to any location fast. Changemarks make stepping through annotations/markups foolproof, so reviewing is a snap. Our print dialog shows a detailed preview of the page, including margin lines so there are no surprises.

Security

Question: Will Brava work with my existing network security system?

Yes. Brava honors existing firewalls and encryptions.

Question: Can Brava edit document/drawing files?

No. Brava does not allow for any editing of the original file.

Question: Can users edit markups created by others?

Users cannot edit another user's annotations. Each annotation entity is marked with the creator's username, date and time. Users with sufficient permission can consolidate all markups, even from other users, for a workflow process.

Question: What is secure CSF and Visual Rights?

Visual Rights allow you to control how your documents can be used when sent to suppliers, customers or partners. Brava allows document, image and CAD files to be published into an accurate, encrypted, secure Content Sealed Format (CSF) that embeds persistent Visual Rights like print, copy, measure, markup and analyze rights and the ability to expire the file on a certain date. You can also add watermarks and banners and include annotations. A CSF file can be viewed with Visual Rights control using our free Brava Reader. Unlike PDF, a secure CSF file is not an open format and cannot be edited by third party software.

Question: Can a user capture a copy of the file they are viewing?

No. Brava does not send your original documents files to any part of the client disk. The Brava Server processes your drawing and image files behind the firewall and delivers compressed page by page renditions of the documents through the HTTP/HTTPs server. Optional client side processing for opening files is available for PDF and TIFF and when enabled, file information is securely passed for only memory processing.

Technical Questions

Question: What is the setup and installation procedure?

Installing Brava Enterprise consists of basic components that need to be setup and configured: Brava Server Services (Queue and Licensing), Brava Job Processor, and the Brava Viewer Client. This involves a very simple installation program that walks you through the steps required to setup the components in your server environment and deployment scheme.

Question: How can the client be installed on Restricted User desktops?

The BravaClientInstall.bat script provides an alternative method to the CAB download for installing the Brava client control. If the user is set up as a Restricted User as opposed to a Standard User, this script will register the necessary components to allow a Restricted User to run.
